I can’t believe it’s October already! It feels like summer just ended. But as much as I love summer, I do love the month of October (after all, it is peak candy corn season). I’m extra excited this year because the fall season will be so much fun with Owen…dressing him up for Halloween, carving a pumpkin with him, and taking walks in the nice cool weather.
But looking back, the month of September was pretty great. The high point was Owen’s baptism, which was a couple weeks ago. The weather was perfect and it was so wonderful to gather with Owen’s family and friends. Most importantly, after such a busy day, Owen passed out for over 6 hours straight, the longest he has ever slept.
Owen’s christening day did have a couple of snafus. Richard and I were still making our house and yard suitable for guests minutes before the start of Mass. We rushed to dress Owen in his dad’s christening outfit and get him ready for church. Well, Owen was a bit too large for Richard’s old outfit. After squeezing him into it, we realized we had put it on backwards and had to start all over again. As a result, we were five minutes late for Mass.
During the baptism ceremony, Owen was happily sucking on his binky, calm despite being in a too-tight outfit and a ridiculously tiny bonnet. But the ceremony seemed like it was never going to end and I knew Owen’s contentment wasn’t going to last much longer. Each moment that went by, he was getting more restless and hungry. The binky was the only thing keeping him satisfied.
Then he dropped it.
Horrified, I watched Owen’s binky roll across the altar floor. I resisted the urge to lunge after it. Owen immediately began to whimper.
We couldn’t pick the now contaminated pacifier off the dirty ground and pop it back in our baby’s mouth in front of a crowd of judging people. Richard and I stared helplessly at the binky.
Owen’s whining grew louder. Screw it – germs will only build his immunity. I handed Richard the binky and he shoved it in Owen’s mouth.
Reunited with his pacifier, Owen was once again quiet and content. He barely made a fuss when the christening water was poured all over his head and face, like the good little child of God that he now is.
Richard and Owen’s baptism outfit…thankfully we were able to get Owen out of it without any rips or the use of scissors.
Patiently waiting for his baptism to get underway in his tiny bonnet.
Enjoying his binky on the altar.

Another banner decoration that I crafted for Owen’s special day.
I love this. What a great day!!
