10 Months Old and Sprouting Up for Summer

Happy Memorial Day and Hello Summer!

Owen has reached the double digits – 10 months old! He’s looking less and less like a baby and more and more like a little boy each day.

Owen claps now. Pretty much everything and anything is worthy of applause. He also just started waving, although it looks more like an arm spasm than a greeting. Owen discovered imitation a couple weeks ago too; when I cough, he coughs. And then he giggles.

Now that Owen crawls faster than most adults can run and climbs stairs effortlessly, life with baby gates has started. Which means that poor Walter no longer has access to his water bowl. Although he can’t quench his thirst whenever he’d like, some things have gotten better for my Favorite Son. Owen is starting to pet Walter, instead of beating him or pulling out his fur. I think they’re going to be besties soon.

Despite being a ravenous little fellow, Owen is a real pain in the ass when it comes to solid foods. He only likes three things: yogurt, cheerios, and bananas (sometimes). He’s just not interested in anything that has actual nutritional value, like vegetables. It’s baffling, considering he has no problem chowing down on paper, dirt, and Walter’s fur. I’ve tried every technique possible to “trick” him into eating and sneak a spoon into his mouth. But he’s smarter than me, because, sure enough, all the food ends up everywhere EXCEPT Owen’s tummy. Walter usually gets a good size meal out of these feeding/torture sessions. Sometimes I wonder if those devices they use to force feed foie gras ducks would work on a baby.

All of this disinterest in solid food has led me to conclude one thing – my breast milk must taste phenomenal. Like liquid candy corn. It’s clearly habit-forming and my 10-month-old is a milkaholic.

I didn’t realize that babies have so much physical strength. No one warned me that a 23lb human can be as brawny as the Incredible Hulk. When Owen grabs a spoon, the Jaws of Life cannot pry it from his fingers. He likes to show off his muscles on the changing table; with little effort, he recently ripped the large mirror hanging above it right off the wall and threw the table lamp on the floor. I used to worry about Owen getting hurt, but now I’m worried that he’s going to hurt me. He’s like Lennie from Of Mice and Men, oblivious of his own strength.

But along with getting stronger every day, he’s also getting cuter. I cannot get enough of this face:

And here are Owen’s May-themed photos for his 10-month birthday. Sprouting up in the garden! He really is growing like a weed.
