Groovy Hippie Birthday Party

For Carmendy and Winnie’s joint birthday celebration (a year and a half ago), we decided a “peace love party!” would be perfect. Their groovy retro birthday party had a bit of twist on the popular hippie theme though – think bold and bright 70s disco. My kids like messy and vibrant (remember their messy birthday party a few years ago?), so a muted hippie peace party would not fit their personalities.

The girls love music and dancing, and the Trolls movie was a big inspiration for the party decorations. Lots of color, lots of sparkle with a groovy vibe!

I found a swirly pattern of colors to use for the placemats, and then I carried the colors through the rest of the decorations. Planning the decorations for the groovy retro birthday theme was easy using these colors to tie it all together.

Here are some highlights from the decorations:

  • Obviously, disco balls were essential. They gave the party sparkle! In addition to bunch of disco balls in different sizes for the tabletop, I also ordered a bunch of mini disco ball-style Christmas tree ornaments that I turned into toppers for drink stir sticks. All I did was pop off the ornament caps and strings for hanging, and then shoved a white lollipop stick in their place. The ornaments were made out of styrofoam, so I didn’t even need glue – just had to push the sticks into the styrofoam.
  • Old music records from my dad were a perfect accent on the tabletop.
  • For napkin holders, I tied ribbon around fuchsia cloth napkins with daisies that I made out of white and yellow felt balls. The daisies were just as easy to make as the disco ball stir sticks! I just glued them together with my favorite crafting tool, my trusty hot glue gun.
  • I made the backdrop out of crepe paper in shades of pink with balloons that I put together to look like daisies. It was super cute!
  • Kids round flower sunglasses in different colors served as decorations for the table as well as favors. Mini troll dolls and peace sign necklaces were also favors!
  • My talented friend Pam of Cookies All Day masterfully made the cookies to match the girls’ groovy retro birthday party.
