Emily’s Vintage Alphabet Schoolhouse Baby Shower

Another summer, another shower! Having two sisters equals a lot of parties to plan. But I love throwing parties for them – we know each other so well, it’s easy to pick a perfect theme.

This was definitely true for Emily’s baby shower. My younger sister Roberta and I automatically knew her shower had to have some kind of school theme; she’s the most passionate first grade teacher that I’ve ever met. We saw a couple of other showers on Pinterest that used vintage alphabet flashcards and that was all the inspiration that we needed. The results were the cutest vintage alphabet school baby shower, just right for an amazing teacher like my big sis.

Since Emily is having a girl, we made sure to give the shower a feminine touch with flowers in old glass jars and bottles, cute ribbon, and fabric bunting with pretty prints. We used lots of colors in Emily’s baby shower, but mainly red, pink, and turquoise with accents of yellow.

I designed invitations that looked like an alphabet flashcard. We lined the envelopes with student handwriting paper and made a little card insert for registry information that looked like a chalkboard.

For the shower, we incorporated alphabet and addition flashcards in the decor, along with school items like apples, rulers and bells.

The “learning your ABCs” theme was carried through with lots of signs and cards for the first letter of words. We used sentence strips that we purchased from a teacher store. With my little sister’s excellent handwriting, I loved how this turned out in our decorations!

We also used some vintage style toys in the decor, giving the baby shower a playful touch.

And of course lots of chalkboards!

To complete the shower theme, we sent our guests home with a little school lunch bag. The brown bag favor included lunch snacks and a “note from the teacher.” We displayed the favors on an old school desk that my parents luckily never got rid of.

We had so much fun planning Emily’s shower…now we just have to wait for the arrival of Baby H! I know Mrs. Higgins will be a great mommy. 🙂

  1. Hi- I would love to do this for my daughter’s second birthday party. Where did you get the alphabet flashcards and the cute black chalk board cards? Thanks.

    • We made the chalkboard cards and some of the alphabet cards. We bought some flash cards from the Etsy shop Pretty Little Studio. Good luck with her birthday party!

  2. Hi- I am trying to recreate this for my sister’s shower. Where are the invitations from and how did you create the T is for Thank you chalkboard cards?

    • We put “lunch snacks” in the brown bag – a granola bar and a juice box. We also included a pencil and a sticker and a thank you note that we printed on notes personalized from the teacher and we stamped them. There are pictures in my post if you scroll through. Thank you!

  3. Perfect for my teacher-niece’s upcoming baby shower. I am trying to find a link where I can purchase the invitations and bookmark, if available. I need the invitations soon!

  4. When I initially commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get several e-mails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove me from that service? Thanks a lot!
