Hi everyone! It’s an extra awesome and lucky Friday because it’s St. Patrick’s Day AND I’m showing you a sham-rocking DIY. This rainbow fan garland is so easy and you only need tape and paper to make it. Even I could handle putting together this colorful party decoration in my extreme sleep deprived state (thanks, Baby Winnie!).
So if you’re planning a rainbow-themed or art-themed party, make sure to include this bright and easy rainbow fan garland. It’s such an inexpensive craft and looks amazing!!
RAINBOW FAN GARLAND
Here’s everything you’ll need to make rainbow fan garland:
- Scissors
- Paper in rainbow colors
- Tape
I love a project that doesn’t need many supplies, how about you? This one gets an A+ for only needing 3 things.
Step 1
First, cut the colored paper into squares. I used 8.5 x 11 inch standard letter paper (not cardstock, just plain copy paper) and cut it to make 8.5 x 8.5 squares. Astrobrights brand makes a “Spectrum” pack of 150 sheets with all 25 of their colors that works perfectly! I found a pack in store at Walmart for about $8, but it’s also available on Amazon, Target, Michaels, and Staples.com (I also recently spotted it on Staples store shelves). Origami paper that is already squares also works great for this garland.
Step 2
Next, accordion fold the paper squares. You can do this quickly – it doesn’t need to be perfect!
Step 3
Then fold the folded paper in half, as pictured, to make a fan.
Step 4
Tape the middle, to connect the two folded sides.
Step 5
Next, line up the folded paper fans in color order to make an ombre rainbow. One fan should point up and the next fan should point down, and so on, alternating each paper fan’s direction. Lastly, once the rainbow fans are in order, tape the fans together to form the garland. You could also staple or hot glue them, whichever you prefer.
Now you’re ready to hang the rainbow paper garland and admire your work!
Looks like a real rainbow inside, doesn’t it?

This garland is adorable! What size did you cut the paper to make the can?
Thanks so much! Any square size would work, but I used regular 8.5 x 11 paper so I simple cut it on one side to make 8.5 x 8.5 squares.
How did you hang this? Did you use string or something at the ends to adhere to wall? This is adorable! Thank you!
Thank you so much. Yes, I punched a hole in the ends and tied it up with string. But it’s also light enough for tape to hold it up.

did you use the whole pack of paper? how long in feet was the garland?
Hi! No, I did not use the whole pack of paper. It depends on the pack that you purchase, but the one that I used had six sheets of each of the 25 colors. I didn’t use a few of the colors (white, black, stardust) in the pack. I didn’t measure the garland after I finished it, but each paper fan is about 8 inches long which would make the garland with one fan of each color about 15 feet.
This is so very, very simple and looks so very, very awesome!!! I’m going to make one this weekend for my daughters friends 10’th bday party. I’m positive that everyone is gonna love them. I’m so excited to make one I might make one for my bedroom right now. Thanks very much for sharing, it’s so nice to find something that is not difficult to make and that actually looks 👍 👍2 thumbs up

This is so cute!! I’m moving to a new classroom next year. I’m thinking I need some of this garland in my first grade class.
What size did you make the paper? You mentioned square but not what size square.
Any size square will work! The easiest is to make the 8.5×11 paper into 8.5×8.5 squares so you only have to cut one side of the paper.
