Last month, we celebrated Owen turning 6 with a small Wild Kratts birthday party. He loves Wild Kratts and animals of all kinds (almost as much as he still loves dinosaurs) so he was super excited for his wild creature themed birthday celebration!
Owen requested a Wild Kratts birthday party “at the beach” with a “Chris and Martin cake topper” (the two main characters in the show) months and months ago. The only problem with his request was that I didn’t feel like planning a party for his birthday this year. So I compromised. I made Wild Kratts birthday theme decorations, but his “party” was just a small gathering with his local cousins at the lake club. I didn’t send out invitations. I didn’t even set a time. We just met up at the lake, brought cupcakes and decorations, and ordered pizza. Also, I did not mold Chris and Martin figures out of play-doh as Owen requested for his cake topper. Even I have my limits.
If you’re not familiar with the popular PBS kids show, Wild Kratts is an animated series that follows the adventures of brothers Chris and Martin as they encounter animals in the wild. Thanks to this show, Owen enjoys rattling off facts about creatures like sifaka lemurs. So his Wild Kratts birthday party was filled with all types of wild creatures, not just jungle animals.
Some of the highlights from his Wild Kratts birthday:
- I painted a black and white animal patterns design on a paper table runner and backdrop for photos. I also painted paper with the same design for wrapping the favors.
- The simplest lion cookies ever! I dyed store-bought sugar cookie dough yellow and after baking the cookies, I piped lion faces with melted chocolate.
- The logo for the Kratt brothers in the cartoon show is a paw print, so I cut paws from paper plates and glued them onto a darker plate to recreate the blue and green paw print logos.
- Owen’s favorite animal figure toys were put to good use! I arranged them on the picnic table and on top his birthday cake.
- Owen loves bright, rainbow colors so I made colorful garland with strips of paper. Most of the decorations were made from paper, which made his birthday celebration very budget-friendly!
- I made elephants, snakes and paw prints from fondant to decorate the cupcakes.
- For the favors, we gave Owen’s cousins a pack of markers (Owen loves to color) and plastic wiggle snake toys.
I made the backdrop to hang in our house, just so I could take photos of Owen with it – now you know I’m crazy for sure.
Behind the scenes secret: this cake was salvaged after Carmendy and Winnie fed chunks of the cake to our dog Sophie when it was fresh out of the oven. Proof that frosting can fix anything.
I can’t believe Owen has been 6 years old for over a month already! Before I know it, I’ll be planning his 7th birthday. Any suggestions for next year’s theme?
I love Wild Kratts too!
Was there a special glue you used for the paper plates or just Elmer’s?
Love this! My son is turning 6 next month and is obsessed with Wild Kratts. Might use some if your ideas! The cake is super cute!
Love your printed animal prints backdrop and table runner!
