Ta-dah! I’m finally revealing Owen’s big boy bedroom! He’s been out of the nursery for months, but I’m only getting around to sharing his new space with you today. And after all the time it took to renovate and decorate, I think his bright blue and red room turned out pretty close to perfect. Definitely worth the effort!
Visions and brainstorming for Owen’s room began over a year ago, right after we found out we were expecting Baby #2. Since his nursery was neutral, we knew that his toddler bedroom would fit his adventurous boy spirit — bright blue and red colors with pops of yellow and all the stuff he loves. There isn’t really a theme, just a bunch of Owen’s favorite things in one place!
Ready for the grand tour? Take a look!
Here’s the view from the door:
Our friendly extrovert Owen loves to say “Hello!” to everyone he meets. When I found this sign on Etsy, I knew it had to be part of his new bedroom.
Last year, Owen saw taxi cabs in Philly for the first time and was fascinated. Not long after, he saw this pillow in HomeGoods and, of course, it came home with us.
Obviously, there had to be a Superman presence in the bedroom. We selected a couple pictures that Richard already had in his very large collection of Superman stuff to hang in O’s space.
Since Owen loves cats, we had to include a couple in the decor.
This inexpensive little rug from Ikea really brought the room together and added a bit of coziness.
Mr. Bear moved to the big boy room with Owen, along with his ever-growing group of plush friends.
This tiny upholstered chair was the inspiration for Owen’s room. Cute, right?
I wanted a big statement piece to fill the large blank wall by Owen’s bed. We made the wall interesting with striped neutral wallpaper and a giant DIY sign made from reclaimed barn wood. Do you recognize the phrase that I painted on the wood? It’s from the movie Up and I think it fits Owen’s personality perfectly.
I love the bedding that Owen’s Nana gave him for his second birthday.
I painted this wall art for Owen’s room during one of the last restless nights of my second pregnancy, fueled by the need to nest. A painting with a boy and a dog seemed like a “must-have” for Owen’s room.
I tried to add some vintage-style items, like the rocking horse, fuel station clock, old toy truck, and piggy banks.
I created the vertical 3-piece wall art from animal silhouettes cut from fabric, burlap, and unique frames from Cost Plus World Market.
I wanted Owen’s room to have bright paint colors, but I’m not bold enough to paint the walls red or blue. Instead we (and by “we” I mean “Richard”) painted the trim and doors a bright shade of blue and kept the walls a light beige. I painted other furniture pieces — the nightstand, the mirror, and little shelf — to add more color. I also found this adorable little table and chairs on Craigslist…such a great find!
I picked sheer white curtains with blue stripes because I wanted the room to be full of light.

That’s it, friends! I hope you enjoyed the tour.
That’s really beautiful!!! Love it! 🙂 Many good ideas to get from here. 😀
Thank you!! Love your blog, by the way! I’m also an extended rear facing mama!
Great! Thank you. 😀
What car seat do you have? 😀
We have the Chicco Nextfit and Britax Advocate.
So my hubby and I have been arguing over whether our only boy should have his room done in cars, trains and airplanes or a superhero theme. Guess what? Apparently you can do both. Mind blown! Thanks for saving my marriage. I’m sending the link to my hubby now 🙂
Haha! The mixture of themes is completely the result of my indecisiveness.
i love how you pulled multiple themes together with the two colors like being able to stick in some super hero, without being overtaken with super hero!
Great job, mama! Looks great! I love blue and red together!
I love the bright colors and I like that there isn’t all one theme.
Thanks, Leslie! I just couldn’t do one theme – Owen loves so many things!
Owen is one lucky lad! Very nice space and the colors are darling. Love it 🙂 Pinning!
Thanks so much! We had fun with it. 🙂
This is awesome! I love the colors, and the little personalized touches make all the difference. Great photography, too- really vibrant shots. I hope Owen enjoys his big boy room!
Thanks so much! He does enjoy his room…except at bedtime, haha!
